micro-CT

CT is a diagnostic imaging technique showing cross section images of most materials by means of an x-ray source revolving around an object and focusing x-rays on one "slice" of the material. The x-ray energy is absorbet differently by different materials and the non-absorbet x-rays are detected by receptors and converted into a computer image.

We have a microCT scanner, µCT 40 from Scanco in Switzerland, at our disposal. This scanner achieves the highest resolution (9 µm at 10 mm object size), and even at a maximum exploitation of the scanner, the resolution is around 20 µm. The software allows 2D and 3D reconstructions and comprehensive analyses of bone structure. Maximum size of the scanned object is 36 mm in diameter and 80mm in length.
